Day 6: We started out about 7:30 this morning and this was a chilly morning. I rode with Karen, Sheryl and Sheryl’s father in law. We had great riding early, before the 100+ day riders showed up to try to avoid some congestion on the road. We stopped at our first stop at Lamont Christian School and had wonderful muffins and more baked goods.
Bob Brouwer’s sister is an Ottawa Co. Sheriff and she was there as well, cruiser parked at the side of the road with lights a blazing. Good thing they weren’t on as a result of an accident…she was just waiting for Bob and Lisa who rode up just as we were getting ready to head on out for a few more miles. Another stop at Westview CRC where more food ensued, yogourt, fresh blueberries and granola seemed to be a favourite along with sugar bread, homemade and delightful! We continued on, taking a detour to run past Tyler Buitenwerf’s house where some of the cyclists who were injured were serving snacks. Erinn was there as well. As we rode into Grand Rapids, we were a little early and Sheryl took us a little out of the way to go to her parent’s house for a brief refreshment stop and a cushy place to sit. We were there for 30-45 minutes and then met back at East Grand Rapids School District so we could all ride into Calvin together.
The ride into Calvin was slow, but great. There were a lot of people lining the walkway and streets, cheering and waving. A great homecoming for all of those who are Grand Rapids based, or who have family here. My team was on sweep today so we cleaned the gear truck for the week. Unloading all the extra denomination goods which were stored at the front of the truck as those spaces would be needed for new cyclists who would be joining us for the remaining two weeks of the tour. After going to the CRCNA building to get the new laundry baskets with Erinn and heading to the basement of the Prince Center for hand and body massages, Dad, Uncle Fred and Uncle John picked me up and we headed out to Jenison for a relaxing time at Uncle John and Aunt Janet’s. Time for great food, laundry and sleep.
