Thursday August 14—Day 46—
Chesterton, IN to South Haven, MI.
Day 4: The morning didn’t start out well when my tire got a flat as I checked the pressure and it popped a hole at the stem. Thanks to Rick Gritters with the assistance of changing the tire this time! We started out around 6:45 so those in our group could meet up with family and friends in South Haven by 4:30 EST, 3:30 CST- we had planned to leave at 6:30 but my flat delayed us. We had lots of zig-zagging around and about old US 12.
There was greatly varied scenery today. We cycled past the nuclear plant in Michigan City, IN, through sleepy little towns and cozy little lake shore villages. There were very large new condos, quaint little cottages and older homes which had their views of Lake Michigan interrupted by newer structures in the intervening space. The road surfaces that we wound around were also quite varied. One of the rougher stretches was a concrete road filled with potholes and lots of cracks which ran between some of the more expensive condos and homes that we saw all day.
We moved into Michigan and had wonderful lakeshore views as we rode and great portions of the ride were under the canopy of trees. We started out getting some pics of the Welcome to Michigan sign along US 12
and also got to take a pic of theWelcome to Indiana sign on the opposite lanes as there was not a sign on Wednesday as we entered Indiana—we took pictures of the state line sign instead at a street corner.
There was an 11-12 mile stretch of Blue Star Highway in Michigan as we worked our way towards South Haven which was newly paved, a welcome stretch as smooth roads are much better for all parts of our bodies. We got into South Haven early, which allowed for a little bit of posting before dinner which you read about earlier (Mon Aug 11th post).
